Lloyd K. Ritchie, Jr., DDS

I used to need antibiotics before I went to the dentist.

Now you say I don't.  Why?

People with certain medical conditions (such as a heart murmure or mitral valve prolapse) have been previously advised to take antibiotics prior to their dental visits.  This was based upon recommendations from the American Heart Association (AHA).  As new research findings are published, the AHA along with the American Dental Association (ADA) reevaluate their recommendations in order to assure that your dental treatment continues to be as safe as possible.

The AHA guidelines for antibiotic premedication before dental treatment have recently been revised (Spring of 2007).  Based on the current scientific literature, most patients who have previously been advised to premedicate are no longer advised to do so.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding this issue, please do not hesitate to discuss them with me or with your physician.  If your physician recommends that you take antibiotics prior to your dental appointments, please have him/her write a prescription for you.
